Environment - Water Pollution
In growing cities the needs for water resources has grown for increasing population, increases in water consumption in households, agriculture and for industrial purposes. Hence water is an essential requirement. However due to population growth, disrespect to water ways may arise due to litter or incorrect disposal of waste which will then contaminate water sources. Polluted water and water shortages can lead to food insecurity (lacking of access to safe foods) and major health problems as can be seen in poor developing countries as well as overpopulated countries like China.
As water flow does not stop at city perimeters, the polluted water can travel around the country and affect/contaminate other cities’ water sources and then contaminated water will become a national problem. Household and industrial waste materials are challenging and costly to control. Toxic waste materials are especially difficult to manage and large landfill sites are required to dispose of this waste as well as household and business waste. However large cities in the developing world may not have enough land to spare as landfill sites, as it is already used for housing purposes. Thus untreated sewerage and toxic material are dumped in water sources contaminating the water and spreading lethal infections. |
Water contamination in Sau Paulo:
Sau Paulo, city of Brazil, accommodates a population of more than 20.5 million people, thus proving to be a large city in the developing world. 20 percent of its population live in crowded slums which are built on available land; hillsides with an abundance of mosquitoes after rainfall; under vehicle flyovers and in rubbish areas/landfill sites which are closely situated to heavily pollutant infested industrial factories. Unfortunately, there is no clean sanitation or sewerage system. Streams that serve as a drinking source for the slums are also areas to dispose of garbage and human discards. Thus catastrophic diseases such as typhoid are released, causing deaths amongst slum dwellers. |
How to manage Water Pollution
There are numerous measures to manage air pollution, but the most effective measures used on a global scale include raising awareness and implementing laws and regulations.
Social
If water pollution were to arise in Metropolis, raising public awareness is essential. Citizens can help reduce water pollution by properly disposing of litter on beaches and creating campaigns to urge the government to treat of human, household or business waste properly. This awareness can also lead to charity groups that can help large cities in the developing world like Sau Paulo come up with ways to discard of the pollutants contaminating their water sources. Organisations like these can also help places like Bali or Thailand find an allocated area of land to dump their waste instead of in the water ways. This would make the world a better place to live.
Environment
By reducing water pollution, it would make the environment green once again and serve as a safe water source for the public. It would also prevent the spread of water related diseases like typhoid, which can lead to premature death. Eradicating water pollution can also prevent the death of many sea creatures, making local waterways a better habitat and conserving the local biodiversity.
Economy
Environmentalists believe that a measure to mitigate air pollution is though making the person or group responsible for the pollution to clean it up at their own expense. This means that large mining companies should pay for the clean-up of oil spills like the Deep Water Horizon or have to pay for plastic grocery bags when shopping, which will encourage recycling and lessening waste. This policy is designed to discourage the use of materials that could have adverse effects on the water environment and making it an affordable way to behave in an environmentally friendly manner.
If water pollution became a major problem in Metropolis, the above measures can be implemented to ensure the future growth and sustainability of the city. Endeavours to reduce water pollution must be priority and happen in the short term future and continue to happen over the lifespan of Metropolis. If contaminated water was to be overlooked, the citizens of Metropolis would have infectious water-related diseases and possibly die, water shortages may be allocated and there may not be enough water to sustain the town, ecosystems will slowly die out due to the unlivable conditions of waterways, and the contamination of the local waterways can flow around the country or globe, making polluted water a global problem. For future generations to prosper in the Metropolis, water pollution must be acted upon to ensure the sustainability and a healthy growing population.
